TortoiseMerge in 1.8.0 is significantly slower

TortoiseMerge comes from TortoiseSVN.
For SVN users, an extra 2-3 seconds delay is not as significant as Git users.
It takes at least a few seconds to fetch the file from SVN server, so this is not a big problem.
However, for Git users, everything is local. We expect the result comes immediately. An extra 2-3 seconds delay can be very notable.

You can uncheck "Use ribbons" in TortoiseGitMerge Settings page.

In 1.8.2 it has become noticeably slow again. Just so other people don't have to follow a few links, removing the ribbons makes it fast again. Steps:

1. Open TortoiseGitMerge
2. Click on the top-left big icon and go to settings.
3. Uncheck 'Use ribbons'.

Is anyone planning to do anything about this?
I'm using 1.8.14 and Ribbon still causes major slowdown when checking diffs.

As soon as I disable the "Use ribbons", as suggested in comments above, it opens instantly.

I'd like to use the ribbon because overview is better and buttons are bigger, but this slowdown is really killing it.
