Unable to show log on working directories

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- In any directory within a working directory, right-click and choose "Git Show Log" from the context menu.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see the log for that directory. Sometimes the log details will appear, sometimes I will just see "please wait...", and sometimes I get crashes in TortoiseProc and Tortoise Git Client (usually if I click the log window whilst it shows the 'please wait' message).
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
TortoiseGit 1.6.4.0 64-bit on Windows 7 x64 with Git 1.7.4.msysgit.0.
Please provide any additional information below.
This started happening after I upgraded from 1.6.3.0 to 1.6.4.0. I downgraded back to 1.6.3.0 and I can now see the logs again. After the downgrade I did get the message "An unknown error occurred while accessing xxxxxx.git\tortoisegit.index" in one repository, so I deleted the two tortoisegit* files under .git and that error has gone away.
'git fsck' reports no problems with any of these repositories.
Finally, I did a re-install of 1.6.4.0, and where I was seeing issues with my working directories, I deleted the tortoisegit.data and tortoisegit.index. In each case I was then able to view the logs again.
